Once upon a time, we had a genius of a speech therapist working with us. Her name was Aparna and though she finally moved back home to Pune after five years in the Foundation, her fame lives on in a game she taught us called “Bag Me Kya Hai?” (What’s in the Bag?). It’s a great game which can be adapted for all the children in the circle, regardless of their abilities and which we have continued to use so religiously that on a recent visit, Aparna flew into a rage, re-possessed the BAG and banned us from playing it at all for at least six months. Craftily, however, we made ourselves another one and continue to play it every chance we get. The kids love it and that’s all that counts.

So imagine my delight when I spotted the same game being played at Ummeed!

Aparna, watch your back. It’ll be in Pune before you know it.

It is indeed by far one of the best games for increasing language skills….we have all tried various versions of the same game to suit the cognitive and linguistic level of the child….and it never gets boring….neither for the kids, nor for us!

Recently Anne, our volunteer speech therapist from UK came to observe children with speech and language difficulties at the centre for vocational training. Our young adults demonstrated their favourite bag game and she found it very interesting and appropriate for language development. Aparna, we talk about you so fondly when our visitors appreciate this game.
