The strengths of the family

form the basis of our plans for the child

Overview of Latika Jaanch

Latika Jaanch is the Foundation’s walk-in center for assessments and home management. When it first opened its doors, it offered, for the first time in the history of the state of Uttarakhand, assessments for high-risk newborns at the government-run Doon Hospital. The Foundation was subsequently appointed lead agency to train medical and educational personnel and help establish District Early Intervention Centers (DEICs) throughout the state. This strengthened the government’s capacity and marked an important step towards early identification and accessibility for families with special children living in rural districts across the state.

It didn’t change the disability, but knowing what it was made all the difference in our family.

What We Do At Latika Jaanch

We assess children
Children from birth to age six come with their parents for an intensive assessment. Our inter-disciplinary team of specialists works with the families to arrive at a holistic understanding of the child and her/his strengths and weaknesses.
We train parents and support them with home management plans
In consultation with families, an easy-to-follow program is developed which addresses parent concerns and meets the child’s therapy goals. This program is shared with the parents verbally, in hands-on practice sessions at Latika Jaanch and through a pictorial booklet which parents take home as a visual reminder.
We follow up on high-risk babies in the NICU
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has babies who may be premature or have a problem during birth. These babies are at risk. Our special program which includes a help desk outside the NICU with trained social workers and a weekly follow up program works to avert disabilities due to prematurity and very low birth weight and also prevent acquired disability due to lack of a nurturing, stimulating environment..
We provide information
Our team gives detailed information to the parents about where and how to avail further intervention services in their areas and the rights of people with disabilities. We give the families clear information on government schemes and concessions with details on how to avail. We help families in getting the disability certificate made and explain the benefits of the same.
