When we selected Pradeep Sachdeva Design Associates as the architects for our new campus, we knew our building would be beautiful. Exposed brickwork done with exquisite craftsmanship is PSDA’s signature trademark and we were not disappointed – they even designed a selfie point for us as a surprise! Disabled children, wearing colorful hardhats, stand playfully in front of a brick facade, with brickwork on brick wall spelling out LATIKA

What we didn’t expect was how the beauty around us would awaken a desire for beauty within – in different mediums, colors and textures – and how essential it now seems for our students, staff and families to experience the creative arts in our classrooms, corridors, ramps and gardens.

Art for Latika is one of the many ways we are inviting people to be part of our building adventure. Artist friends and art lovers have begun to donate paintings, sculptures, quilts and photographs to be installed in our new space. Every gift comes with a story.

Here’s one:

Two pictures in one frame. 1st: Cheerful man in red and white print shirt and red hard hat holds a sculpture of two owls up against a brick wall. 2nd: the same two owls now joined in a complete sculpture of six and installed into the wall.

These beautiful, quirky, evocative owls were created by our principal architect, Madhu Shankar. He hand carried what we are calling “A Parliament of Owls” on his last site visit. Packed meticulously in massive layers of bubblewrap, he had taped and buttressed it on all sides to protect it during the flight. At the entrance of the building, we all stood in eager anticipation as he carefully unveiled it. Then stood in stunned silence when we saw that it had broken into three pieces enroute.

Madhu was the first to speak: “PERFECT! Isn’t this what it’s all about? Anything can be broken; everything can be repaired.”

These wise old owls are already installed in our still-under-construction building. I think about Madhu’s words whenever I see them, how the repair lines add to their beauty and how Wabi-Sabi it is to have this particular parliament ruling our roost.

Stayed tuned for more Art for Latika stories.
