First Day!

The First Day at Latika‘s new building was as expected: emotional + glad + chaotic. The children were thrilled; their parents and grandparents were overwhelmed and amazed. Everyone wanted to be everywhere and all at the same time: so much to see, to take in, to appreciate.

But inevitably (we are all human), concerns soon began to emerge (nothing is perfect).

Less than 10 days in, one my favorite grandparents pulled me aside. After congratulating me, thanking me and expressing nothing but joy and admiration, he said: “Lekin, Didi, ek samasya to hai.” (But sister, there IS one problem.)

Parking. The perennial problem of cities. He then described in detail the difficulties he was facing whenever he had to drop his grandson in the car. Coming by bike was fine, but if it rained, it was impossible. What was I going to do about it?

I started to respond and then I had a brain wave: someone else can solve this! So I said: “Bhai jaan! We’ve built this place. Now it’s your turn. Can YOU sort out the parking?”

He got the point. Akal walla admi ishara kaffe hai. (For an intelligent person, a hint is sufficient.)

Don’t try to do everything. Give others a chance to serve too. 😎
