  • Introduction- The evolution of the concept of Specific Learning Disability , the various theories , new research
  • Definitions- The types of Specific Learning Disabilities, their various definitions and what they actually are, effect on the classroom performance and the attitude of the child.
  • The symptoms- what are the commonly found symptoms
  • The assessment- The aim of the assessment is to find the strengths and weaknesses of child. To identify the areas of concern. Taking feedback from the parents, Taking the case history
  • How to make assessment work sheets for the academic assessments—LANGUAGE- expressive and receptive (Hindi- English), reading fluency assessment, audio – visual perception skills, Mathematics level, knowledge of high frequency words, phonological awareness.
  • Writing a report after the assessment and after discussion with parents with Suggestions for the parents and school.
  • Individual Educational plan- preparing an IEP, setting goals for a child keeping his/ her strengths and weaknesses in mind.
  • Remediation- Preparing requirement specific material to achieve the short term goals set for a child. Use of various strategies, Phonic remediation, Math remediation, helping with spellings, writing skills, Vocabulary building exercises. The aim of remediation is not to give ready made material to the trainees but to give an insight in what options exist and how they can be creative and resourceful in preparing material as per the requirement. Remediation is the longest module
  • Counseling- Talking to the child and parent, strengthening the belief in the child. To ensure that the child and his parents and teachers understand the problem and know how to deal with it.
  • The theory of Multiple intelligence
  • A brief introduction to the other issues that may be faced by children in their school- ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, communication disorders, Mild M R, etc.
  • When a new batch starts, there will be a short module on Inclusive Education too.
