Kanwarjit Chawla is one of our family’s oldest and dearest friends. He is Moy Moy’s Godfather and has been an adviser to the Foundation since the day we started. Yesterday, I took the train from Dehradun to Delhi – I was just about to board when I saw Dr K coming down the platform, looking hassled. He had gotten his dates “scrambled” (one of his favorite words) and his ticket was for the next day’s train, though he had to be in Delhi that evening. He rushed off to try and get it sorted while I waited hopefully by the train.

In the end, he got on board and I managed to switch my seat so we were together. Six hours of catching up! It has been years since we have had so much time together and we covered just about everything – kids, grandkids (his), old friends, Barack Obama (we agreed, he’s our man), the global economy, economies of scale, current reading material, risk analysis in the construction industry, architects vs structural engineers and peace in our time. As always, he stretched my mind and showed me new ways to look at things.

What a treat, and how unexpected! And also meant to be! If I had been two minutes earlier, I would have missed him. So like life – full of wonderful serendipitous surprises.
