Almost every child at the Latika Roy Foundation pays something. But not one pays what it actually costs.Our children need highly specialized, individual care. A typical classroom at Karuna Vihar School has a maximum of ten children and there are three staff with each group. That’s not including the therapists, counselors and physicians who move from class to class.

Special education is expensive.

Children pay fees from Rs 500 ($12) to Rs 1500 ($36) per month. But our actual cost is Rs 5500 ($132) per month and no child is ever turned away because of money.

You can sponsor an individual child for a month, a year, or anything in-between. If you sign up for a year, we’ll send you quarterly reports on your child’s progress and development.

Adults with disability have the same need for employment as anyone else. They have to eat, they need to buy clothes, they need a roof over their heads. And – just like every other human being – they want to contribute to their community; they want to have a sense of purpose and achievement.

Employers who hire people with special needs routinely praise them for their diligence, punctuality and dependability.

Have you ever seen the look on a person’s face the day they get their first job? It’s a look that says: “I matter. I’m important. I have a contribution to make.”

Yet adults with disability have shockingly high rates of unemployment. In one study in India, 90% of adults with mental disability were without a job.

We’re trying to change those statistics.

At the Latika Roy Foundation, adults with disability get training in marketable skills and support to find a job. Along the way, we also offer internships, personal development, sex education, relationship counseling and important social skills.

It costs money to provide such a program – Rs 3500 ($88) per trainee, per month, to be precise. But the payoffs are out of this world.
